[news] Western Village-Along the Picturesque Northeast Coast of Western Alaska's Norton Sound, People in Elim, 80 Miles East of Nome, Fish and Hunt Along the Rocky Coast in a Subsistence Economy. This Year a Commercial Fishing Industry is, for the First Time, Just Getting Started in Western Waters. Fish Buyers from Anchorage Are Now in the Norton Sound Area Paying up to 8 Cents a Pound for Chum Salmon. Fishermen at Elim, Who in Years Past Fished Only to Eat, Are Now Getting Hard Cash for Their Work. Although the Sound Area Will Never be the Fishery Bristol Bay and other Parts of the State Are, the Industry Will Provide Cash Income for Villagers Along the Coast Where, at Present, No Industry Exists at All.
