[news] Awarded for Rescue-Governor Jay S. Hammond Was Honored Last Week by the Civil Air Patrol for His Participation in an Aircraft Rescue Mission Last December. a "Certificate of Recognition" Was Presented to Him by Colonel Bradford Sharp (Above Right), the U.S. Air Force Liaison Officer to the CAP's Pacific Region, and the CAP Wing Commander Colonel Russell J. Anderson (Above Center). On December 22, 1977, Governor Hammond Was Flying Home to Naknek for Christmas. He Intercepted Radio Communications That Indicated Another Plane in the Area Was in Trouble. It Crashed on the Edge of Lake Illiamna. The Governor Flew to the Crash Scene, Picked up Two Injured Persons and Flew Them to Illiamna Where They Obtained Commercial Transportation to Anchorage Where They Were Hospitalized. One Had Back Injuries and the other Suffered from Severe Head Injuries.
