[news] Oogruk Hunting in Offing-All Along the Coast of Northern Alaska, it Will Soon be Time to Hunt the Oogruk, or the Bearded Seal. the Oogruk is a Large Seal That Attains the Weight of About 700 Pounds or More. the Two Men in the Picture Are Happily Unloading a Medium Sized Oogruk They Have Caught on the Ice off Barrow. the Best Time of the Oogruk Hunt at Point Hope and Barrow, and other Villages, is Around the Latter Part of May or Early June When the "Baskers" or "Sleepers" Get on the Ice to Bask or Sleep in the Sun. Around That Time, the Sea Ice is in the Process of Melting and Breaking up, Creating Numerous Patches of Open Water and through Which the Oogruk Comes up to Breathe at Which Time They May be Shot and Retrieved with Hooked Lines by the Hunters. These Animals Are Valuable to the Eskimos Who Use the Skins for Covering for Their Umiaks and the Meat for Food.
