[news] Reindeer Airlift-The Recent Airlift of 300 Reindeer from Mekoryuk on Nunival Island to Togiak Was a Difficult Operation. the Reindeer, a Semi-Wild Animal, is Difficult to Contain. the Animals Had to be Tied and Blindfolded So They Could be Loaded on the C-123 National Guard Aircraft. Young and Old at the Village of Mekoryuk Took Part in the Operation. The picture Shows a Reindeer That Had Been Tied and Blindfolded. it is Being Loaded on a Stretcher and Carried to a Waiting Truck from Which it Was Loaded on the Aircraft. the Animals Were Taken to a Holding Pen at Pogiak and They Were to be Transported by Boat to Hagemeister Island 25 Miles Away. the Operation Was Coordinated by Bureau of Indian Affairs Project Development Office at Anchorage under the Direction of Vernon Bottenfield.
